Training For a Performance
- By Steve Andrews

The Performance Level is only as good as the Performer Level

The Level of skill is due to the fact of practice and repetition. No human begin is perfect and needs to train all the time every techniques. So don't try and leave behind the "easy" techniques and tricks. The reason that begin is the simple fact everything has a relation to each other, every martial art and weapons art has the same ideologies:

•  Angle of attack or defence

•  Application of power and speed

•  Body Mechanics

•  "Zone" Theory

A great analogy is:

If you say you kick, you must use your hips turning to a 45-degree angle and your arms driving forward to generate power and speed. If you punch you use your hips and Legs to do the same. But to apply all the above you must use muscle memory and "Zone" theory to get the max output and minimum effort.

You need to train everything from basics to advanced techniques, to understand everything, don't slack off for a performance.

Understanding one thing can lead to all things been understood

Train as you would perform

When I train for a performance I act as if I was actually doing the actual performance. I apply pressure upon myself by acting in front of a crowd or a video camera, which makes me nervous and makes me get as close to a real performance situation as possible.

This is for mental conditioning.

If you condition you brain to act in a tense situation for the first time, you become nervous and show that on the outside

But if you keep exposing you mind to the same situation its becomes relaxed and you get into the "Zone" only through "Repetitive Pressure Training" you can perform without showing those nerves in your performance and techniques.

"Zone" theory

Have you ever felt a form that seemed to flow without you putting effort in, and you can't remember what happened because of it.

In that instance your "In the Zone" a place in sports in which a persons mind actually takes a back seat and the body just acts without prior instructions.

This is obtained via Repetitive training R.P Training over and over again so the body programs it self to act in reflex instead of thought, through muscle memory and sub-conscious action.

Repeat the form over and over again, until you feel that snap into place.

Before the Performance - how to get your energy high

•  Relax the day before - remember your going to need plenty of sleep and eat well, and no over excursion

•  About an hour before the performance listen to the music that your performing too, let you mind remember what it needs to do.

•  Keep moving, Don't stand still, keep your energy high until you finish your form

•  Perform a Dry run of the form about half hour before the performance, helps you remember it for the "Zone"

This is just what I do whether it works for others I don't know but just try it and see.

Hope this helps
